It has to be said we enjoyed O’Neill’s company and the security he provided, as much as forest, the trail and the summit. He had a perfect sense of when to stop us for to rest and gently move us on again, providing the perfect pace. Along the way, he chatted to us about the mountain, the plants and the animals. On the trail, we were expertly guided every step of the way (safely up and down the mountain) by O’Neill - a 66 year old force of nature, who looks after the trail and takes great pride in the mountain and the experience he provides to the people he guides. It was amazingly beautiful and provided a very varied and interesting trail of trees roots, rocks, boulders and gullies, while the forest sheltered us from the heat and a cooling mountain breeze through the trees provided more comfort as we climbed. It was our first time in a rainforest and to hike up a volcano. Wow ! What can we say □ Definitely left a piece of our hearts on this trip - to the forest and to O’Neill our guide, who promptly collected us from our hotel in the morning and expertly cared for us on the mountain trail. Thank you, to the local group who maintains this fine fortress, and to Lynn for taking us here. The sign noted that the artillery solders were the first to be spared and offered to join the other side, as their talents in planning how to shoot far off (ships, etc.) were valuable.īrimstone Hill Fortress provides fantastic views of St. Most of the fortress remains as it was, save the quarters for the artillery soldiers. The Fortress is made of limestone… quarried on the mountain, sadly by slaves, but at least not hauled up the tall hillside it’s 714 feet elevation at the Visitor’s Center and 750 feet elevation up at the top battery. The British built the fortress to defend against the French and others the French claimed the northern top of St. There is a video in the Visitor’s Center, and a gift shop there, too. The fortress sits 700+ feet above sea level, and the road has many switchbacks as you work your way uphill. Lynn of Lynn’s Taxi & Tours provided us an island tour, and we visited the English’s Brimstone Hill Fortress, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, on the tour. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) for the first time in 2023, and had a great time.
